Movement is my medicine, and sharing its healing aspects is my purpose. This is what I am doing with the gifts and passions I have been given. Movement continuously heals me, and I am here to share that gift with others. I lose myself in my dance, swept away in my flow state. My calling is to leave an impact with my dance. What is yours?
During an upbeat, high-energy, African dance class, my teacher Nii Armah Sowah invites us all to “Ask yourself what you are doing with what you’ve got.” What are you doing with the gifts you have been given? How are YOU leaving an impact on the world? We all have creative and courageous power within us - how are you using it, and how does it benefit others?
We all are given a gift, and I believe it is often something we are called to as children. I have been dancing ever since I can remember. Reflecting back on my life, I recognize how dance has been a space I always return to. It is my home. I encourage you to reflect on your life - is your current self nourishing your inner child? I have found that when my inner child is nourished, my impact on others is profound. When my inner child is nourished, I am aligned with my soul purpose.
When we reconnect with what brought us joy as children, we begin to remember our essence — and from that place, we can begin to explore how our gifts can uplift others. While we have many lessons to learn in this life and many reasons for being where we are right now, we always have the power to do what we can with what we’ve got. Now, more than ever, it is important to use our gifts and our passions for good. And, whatever your gift or passion may be, it is important. It is valid. It is authentic to you, and that is the most beautiful thing that is. So, what are you doing with what you’ve got?
Maybe you feel your calling but aren’t sure how to begin. Perhaps you have all the power to do the work, but you are lacking the passion. Your journey is YOURS and YOU get to decide. And the beautiful thing is, you run at your own pace. You don’t have to wake up tomorrow, let go of everything that doesn’t serve you, and start a new life led by your passion. Or, you can. Honor your own journey, which can start small by simply creating space.
You have to create space for the work you are meant to do. Reflect on how you’re spending your precious time — how much of it fuels your fire and ignites your soul? Tend to that fire, and watch it grow.
Reflecting on our purpose can be a daunting task, but I assure you that the work is worth it. Our life changes when we open ourselves up to our purpose - everything, including things out of our control, is seen from a new light. Aligning with our purpose is freeing. Uplifting others with our purpose is impactful. I hope to see a world where we all free ourselves and uplift each other, fueled by the passion of purpose.
